Pheasant, Partridge, and Guinea
|
Staples for every fly tying benchPheasant, partridge and guinea feathers are among the most useful fly tying materials and should grace the desk of all fly tyers. Partridge is extremely well suited for tying soft hackle flies, and its natural speckling makes it essential for use as a tailing material for nymphs. Pheasant body feathers perform the same functions as partridge, but the fibers are longer and slightly stiffer so they are better suited for larger flies.Strung rump hackle is longer than body feathers and is a very popular material for tying large spey style flies. Pheasant feathers are often used as cheeks on various traditional trout, salmon and saltwater flies. Guinea is very popular for use in ornamental and salmon flies, but under-utilized for tying soft hackles and nymphs. This is a shame because it is excellent especially when used to tie caddis pupae flies. One popular traditional nymph pattern, the Tellico Nymph, uses guinea fibers for the tail. |
